Introduction to Monoprinting Workshop

Learn trace-transfer, stenciling, and direct drawing in this fascinating class.

2.5 hours Class size 1 to 6 guests       £50 (PayPal Pay in 3 available)

Head to Hope Press for a relaxed, hands-on evening of monoprinting – arguably the most immediate and expressive printmaking technique out there.
Because no two prints ever come out the same, it's the perfect place to let go of any need for perfection and just see what happens as you go.
You'll spend the evening working through three core techniques, each introduced with a short demo before you get properly stuck in:
  • Trace monoprinting – drawing onto the back of paper laid over an inked plate, using different tools and marks to shape line and texture
  • Stencils, masks and textures – building layered, considered compositions by controlling exactly where the ink transfers
  • Direct mark-making – working straight into the ink with palette knives, plastic cutlery, rags and anything else to hand, for loose, gestural, expressive results (a personal favourite)
Everyone gets their own workstation for the evening, so you can work at your own pace and settle into the calming, almost meditative headspace that monoprinting tends to bring on.
By the end, you'll have a stack of your own original prints, a solid grounding in the basics of monoprinting, and quite possibly a few happy accidents along the way.
This one's sociable by design, so bring a friend and a bottle if you fancy it, and see in the weekend with ink under your nails.
What you'll get
A stack of monoprints for their sketchbooks

Believe it or not, print-making saved my life!
A few years ago, my life looked pretty normal: I was a Dad, a garden designer, and a keen walker. Suddenly everything changed. One day I simply couldn’t get off the sitting-room floor. I’d had a nasty bug and the next thing I knew: I was diagnosed with ME/CFS.
For a long time, things were pretty tough, but as the weeks passed, I began to discover painting and printmaking. And as the weeks turned to months I was making more and more art, and steadily feeling better.
Print-making was a refuge: a place to get better from. As I recovered my health I realised I wanted to share the magic of making things with other people; and the dream of Hope Press was born!
Everyone could do with more space in their life, more time for creativity, more peace and flow. I now run a variety of classes and workshops in printmaking – including a course for people with illnesses like mine – I hope you'll find something for you.
