Most of our workshops are led by colleagues from Hobbycraft stores across the UK, including craft experts from our Hobbycraft Artisan programme. They use their expertise in specific areas of craft to create workshops that show participants new skills and inspire future projects.

I attended the Hobbycraft One-to-one Sewing Workshop on Saturday, 6th April, 2024, at the York Hobbycraft location. I was glad my mother was able to attend as a guest.

Dawn, our teacher, was very friendly and informative about the basics of where to start with a sewing machine. She demonstrated how to thread the machine and then gave me guidance when I had a go at threading and using the machine. She explained in great detail the different stitches that can be used.

I liked that the workshop took place in a private room at the back of the store and also that I was able to have hands-on experience with a sewing machine.

Our teacher Isabel was enthuasistic and provided my child with lots of coloured clay. He learnt how to mould the clay and made two fantastic models to take home. Isabel was extremely patient and kind with my son. She is an absolute asset to the company and we will definately be coming again to her classes and will be telling our friends and family of the fabulous time we had this afternoon.

I would defintely recommend taking the class as I was unaware of the modelling clay and it is so cheap to buy. The class was good value for money. There was nothing we didnt like from the class.

My daughter made a cute sheep with air dry clay and really enjoyed the workshop and taking her fabulous creation home. The lady showing us was excellent, both engaging, clear instructions and talked naturally to children. Great value for money and a fun activity to break up the school holidays. I was the only person in the workshop and so the session went at my pace. The teacher was helpful and shared tips. A downside was that the workshop was for only 1 hour which wasn't long enough to paint the figures, let them dry and then set them inside the baubles.

I attended the Crochet for Beginners class last week in York with my sister-in-law. Our tutor was Dawn and she was brilliant, so patient and encouraging. I will definitely be booking another workshop as I enjoyed it so much. The lady was very nice, but we found her knowledge and format of the class didn't match up to what we required.
There wasn't much structure to the class, which we understand that everyone wants to learn different things, but we asked for a indepth look at design space and the functions of each button, and I didn't find that was the case. We did get some good little hints and tips, but it wasn't entirely suited to us.
The lady felt a little like she was dropped into running class, rather than that being her specific role. She very kindly showed us the way she made things, the way she did things at home, but didn't seem completely knowledgeable in depth to adapt to what we required, especially the technology and design side of things. I wonder, if the same class was taken in another store, would the structure be the same?
Having a simple project to work on myself during the lesson would have been better, rather than just observing the tutor.
Again, to reiterate the lady was lovely, just not at the level which we expected from the class.

Teacher was great with the children and we got to keep the supplies we had used and take them home with us so great value for money. The kids got to make 5 Christmas cards each and it was all well timed. Location was in the middle of the store which worked really well but can see it being a bit of a bother if the store was to get busy. Look forward to joining more sessions in the future the kids loved it perfect and convenient location too.

I enjoyed this course. Our teacher was very good and patient - I had a lot of difficulty with making a bow! She explained and demonstrated what to do very clearly.
We were in a room at the back of the shop which was adequate.
The items to make the wreath were good and we were able to take everything home.
The tools were not great, only 2 wire cutters between four people and the teacher. One of these was not very good and the scissors were not very good either.
It would have been nice to have had some Christmas music in the room and a mince pie.

It was a nice activity and the workshop leader was lovely with the children. However, there weren’t the full range of resources available as they had been used up on previous workshops. This was disappointing - we would have been better off buying the resources ourselves, as there were plenty on the shelves!

The workshop was good fun - a bit basic. All the wreaths were pretty much the same given the materials and input. Having done Christmas wreath workshops elsewhere I was hoping for a bit more variety of material that we could pick and choose.
But overall it was a nice hour to spend with friends.

The workshop was very good and excellent value for money. It was a class of five and our teacher was good and very patient. The only downside was that the class didn’t really go on for long enough. It lasted an hour and a half and it absolutely flew by.
This is the second Hobby craft workshop that I’ve been on and I would definitely recommend.

The workshop itself was good and the staff member was lovely, the resources were however disappointing. The paints were a watery and the tape used wasn’t great, meaning the finished result has bleeding paint so the initials aren’t sharp.

I really only wanted advice on which machine to buy. When I asked for advice in the store the lady I spoke to didn’t have a clue. She then told me that there was a class for £5 which there wasn’t. Dawn who did the one to one was helpful but as I’m not a novice I didn’t feel it was worth £20. I did buy the machine which was great but you should get the money refunded if you go on to buy one from hobby craft.

They weren’t ready when we arrived. No machine. Moved to the stand up display table, no blade in the demonstrator. Opened new machine, talked about rescheduling. We’ve waited since Xmas for a Monday in the holidays to attend. We are a 45 min drive away.

Time was added on at the end but made us late for our next appointment so missed the cinema. Struggled for Wi-Fi throughout the class.

Learnt a few bits but just unorganised. They are moving store but this was booked weeks ago. Poor organisation. They could have rescheduled. No one had planned to start at 2
Pm.

I had an extremely good instructor as I am deaf I was relieved I was the only pupil. Dawn explained very well the contents of the box and how to use a glue gun as I had never used one before , I do feel however that the class should be at least 1/2 an hour longer as sorting out the flowers and putting them ready to use takes quite a while. The venue was quite good but having customers in the same area moving around you is off putting tho Dawn said when they move there will be a dedicated class room. However I enjoyed my class and really like the eggs and flowers. Am now looking forward to completing the wreath.

Timing mix up in store meant that they were not ready for us at the appointed time. The course leader was good but the course content was quite a bit short of filling up the full hour. We could easily have been finished within 30 minutes. Some means of cleaning hands after handling clay would have been very handy too. Frankly, hand sanitiser and blue roll doesn't do the job. Also, if you're going to have children in for workshops then you really need to have provision for customer toilets.

Shannon was a lovely class leader. The materials were all ready for us on arrival. We were surprised and delighted that at the end of the session we received an acrylic paint kit plus canvasses to take home. It was fun doing the class in the middle of the shop - be warned though - this is a messy one.

Great value for money. My 7 year old daughter thoroughly enjoyed this key ring making workshop.
Her instructor was great with instructions and my daughter was able to make more than 3 key rings in her sessions and got to take home the spare materials. Highly recommend this workshop

My brush lettering course was fantastic. The teacher was lovely, friendly, encouraging and explained things really well. The brush pens were really lovely and I will definitely use this new craft in future card-making and tag-writing! It has also spurred me on to try some calligraphy, shaving enjoyed doing the letters especially, I think I might like calligraphy too. The session went so quickly, as I was absorbed by what I was doing and I left feeling really relaxed and calm. It is a great way to pass a few hours and I would heartily recommend it to anyone. It is so mindful, as you have to concentrate but the result is beautiful. An absolutely great way to spend an hour!

I brought my 2 Grandchildren 6 &12yrs old. They enjoy making the Christmas tree decoration. My 6yr old had a lot of help from the teacher. The teachers name was Mira, she was very friendly, helpful, easy going & generous in nature. We all felt relaxed around the table. The materials were ideal & in abundance. It was a very worthwhile visit & no doubt i will arrange another visit. I’m thinking of joining the embroidery & crochet classes next year.

Teacher very helpful and knowledgeable. The group size was just right - four of us so teacher was able to give us some individual attention - which I personally needed!
Venue was fine despite being in the shop. It gave it a relaxed feel but if workshops move than individual room that would be fine too.
Duration was just right and the time flew.
Overall I enjoyed the workshop and will look for future similar ones.

An enjoyable crafting activity which was sadly spoiled by the lack of correct equipment. There were not enough craft boxes for my friend and me and while the assistant tried to supply materials from the shop floor, these were not the same as those provided for others in the group. This was disappointing when compared with other courses we have done in store.

Initially I was a bit disappointed. The training session was held on a paint spattered table on the shop floor for anyone to watch and I'd believed it was one to one training, but someone else had been booked on to the same session with me. However, the trainer was brilliant. She was very welcoming, knowledgeable and very good at explaining what to do. She answered all our questions and demonstrated how to use the sewing machine very clearly. Five stars for her! I took a star off my review because of the venue and lack of clarity over whether it was one to one, which are not her fault at all. Altogether I'm very glad I did this session as it's given me confidence to get the sewing machine out of its box and have a go!

This was my 1st time attending a workshop at hobbycraft, I wanted to learn about the cricut maker before I bought it. The artisan teacher was very knowledgeable and was able to give us a good basic knowledge of how to work the machine and how to use design space. She was clear and easy to understand. I would have liked to have seen a range of samples, to show what the machine can produce. Using different materials to enhance the workshop visually. These could then be talked about explaining the tools and products needed to create such crafts.

Both my friend and I were looking forward to learning the basics of crocheting however we were told by the trainer it wasn’t for us. The trainer was pleasant enough but when we couldn’t grasp the basic ‘magic circle’ we went onto being shown another stitch when that wasn’t successful shown another…. At the end of the session we came away with some nice rolls of wool but nothing else. Really disappointed, oh… I’m also left handed which complicated things ☹️ Should there be a tick box to declare if you are left or right handed I have done other courses with hobby craft without problem.

We got a lovely box of goodies to help us on our way - including brush lettering pens and practices sheets.

Happy to pay a small fee for it and we also brought some more painting animals and took home afterwards.

Think it’s worth advertising the workshops in store as well as on the website as lots of kids went pass us and asked how to take part but no one really knew about the activities on the website.

My teacher, Kirsty, was great. I’m trying to book a second session with her for next week. Standing for just over an hour was a bit of an issue. The table is high and the machine is screwed into the table. I would’ve appreciated a high stool/seat to sit on.

Class taken at hobby craft york, comfortable seating lots of space.
Teacher worked at a pace easy to keep up with and take in, learned about how to use my new electronic machine after using a hand operated one for many years, would highly recommend a tutorial.

I had a problem with threading the top needle and after speaking to the tutor now know where I was going wrong. The location of the class was upstairs at the Monks Cross branch in York. The tutor was very helpful and knowledgeable and I found her easy to understand. I am so pleased that I booked this tuition as I can now move on with projects I have planned. I also had a problem understanding a pattern I had got and the tutor was able to help which is really good. We'll worth the £10 I think.

This was a brilliant course!

You had plenty of space and it was peaceful. The teacher was lovely and stepped you through everything. She was very happy to help.

The course is good value, I would recommend it to all ages!
Included in this workshops was paints, canvas, palette, brush and good quality sketch pad.
