Fall in love with crochet by creating a classic granny square! You’ll be able to combine beautiful colours to stitch this traditional crochet design, perfect for setting you up for so many other projects. Granny squares can be used to make blankets, garments and more – we’re here to help you get started with your first one.

With the help of an Hobbycraft Artisan, you’ll learn how to crochet a granny square by using all the key techniques. You’ll use double and treble stitches, as well as learning how to decipher a granny square pattern and how to change yarn colours.

There’s a kit included with the workshop to give you everything you need for the project. Within the 90-minute session, you’ll be able to create one granny square, though you can continue to practice making more once you’ve got to grips with all the skills. The kit even features a pattern for a granny square blanket to help you continue your adventure in crochet!

This workshop is the perfect way to grow your crochet confidence, with tips and support from a pro! It’s ideal if you already have basic knowledge of the stitches but are looking to refresh yourself or develop further.

  • 5/5 from Katy Asprey, attended Aug 2026: Shannon was amazing with my 9 year old daughter and has given her lots more confident in her crocheting. Since the session she has not stopped making different things doing different strips and following utube videos to learn even more. I highly recommend this class my daughter was the only person who was booked on so she got a 1-2-1 class which massively benefited her.
  • 5/5 from Charlotte Goodwin, attended Aug 2026: My friend and I turned up as the only two learners in the workshop. We were both new to crochet. The teacher was kind and encouraging and met us both at our level of competency. She directed us to helpful sources to continue learning on our crochet journey. Came away feeling more confident with feedback and support, and questions answered.
  • 5/5 from Sheena Vlemmiks, attended Jun 2026: I attended the granny squares crochet class. The teacher was very good. She explained and demonstrated everything well, so I learned a lot from this class. I was very pleased with what I produced, and this will encourage me to take things further.
  • 5/5 from Lisa McIntosh, attended Jan 2026: The teacher I had at there Bolton store is really good. She gave clear instructions, was friendly and approachable and provided a lot of support throughout the lesson. She taught me two different ways to start the granny square and shared suggestions for what projects they can be used in. I was also given a handout which helped when I got home and tried to make a granny square on my own (successfully ). Great class!
  • 5/5 from Anonymised ClassBento customer, attended Oct 2025: The session taught me the fundamentals of crocheting a granny square. It was helpful to have completed the previous workshop including the basics of crochet stitches. The teacher was excellent, very knowledgeable able. Her instructions were clear and she used demonstration effectively. She was encouraging and supportive. The materials and hand outs were useful for the session.
  • 5/5 from Charlotte Headley, attended Sep 2025: Super lovely teacher who was really patient and good at explaining everything to my daughter. My daughter is confident in her new skill and excited to make a blanket! Thank you so much!
  • 5/5 from Jane-Avril Roberts, attended Apr 2025: Shannon was a patient teacher who guided us through all the loops and knots of crocheting and made the 1.5 hours great fun.
  • 5/5 from Emma Byron, attended Mar 2025: Really good class Shannon was a fab teacher and we learned lots- would definitely recommend!
  • 5/5 from Andrew Mackey, attended Mar 2025: I attended this short workshop, run by Jess. She was such a good teacher, very supportive and encouraging.....I learned a lot in a short time. The venue was great, loads of free parking and the workshop area was nicely separated from the rest of the store so it was calm and quiet. Would definitely recommend it!
  • 5/5 from Tracy Winters, attended Feb 2025: Jess was brilliant she made me fèel at ease, loved how jess explained the different so clearly would definitely go to another class for crocheting
  • 5/5 from Velma Livesey, attended Feb 2025: Brilliant “Learn to crochet a Granny Square” at Bolton Hobbycraft Shannon the class tutor was fantastic, very knowledgeable and patient. Couldn’t have asked for a better teacher. I would highly recommend this class, excellent value and content. All materials provided and even instructions to take home.
  • 4/5 from Sharon Dyche, attended Feb 2025: This is a good class to begin to learn the basics, which our helpful teacher had a really good understanding of. However, the time went very quickly and we certainly hadn’t managed to create a granny square by the end of it! In summary, these classes are well priced with good availability and do what they say. It would have been nice to be greeted by a craft table ready to go when we arrived, rather than hanging around with nobody to ask and then two staff members collecting the necessary equipment and copying the instructions while we waited. We did get some extras when we left but I suspect that smaller providers offer a more organised and welcoming service, perhaps even a drink.
  • 5/5 from Deborah Sutton, attended Jan 2025: Jess was fantastic, very clear showing me what I did to do next and very patient when I forgot what I needed to do next. Loved the whole session. Did the beginners course the previous weekend so had absolutely no experience with crocheting. Extremely happy with what I achieved.
  • 5/5 from Melanie Hinks, attended Jan 2025: Explained everything clearly and allowed me to go at my own pace Thank you
  • 5/5 from Kamran Rashid, attended Dec 2024: It was another daddy daughter day activity. We did the crochet class for granny square which was a follow on from the beginners class to crochet. All materials were supplied and we had the class with the lovely Jess. I think it’ll be something I can build on and look forward to doing more classes in the future.
  • 5/5 from Rebecca Forster, attended Nov 2024: My instructor was GREAT. She taught me the beginners crochet month before and that was incredibly helpful so I then felt ready to do granny squares. I came away understanding granny squares SO much better than from YouTube or a book. My instructor was so friendly and clear. I've now crocheted more of a square this evening and understand it so much better.
  • 5/5 from Frances Pilling, attended Oct 2024: I have had a gift voucher bought me. This is the second time I have attended a class for crocheting. My teacher was excellent, she was very patient and explained everything very clearly. The wool was perfect for demonstrating ‘granny squares’. I thought it was definitely worth the money, the time just flew by. My teacher remembers me from before which was several months ago.
