Sak Beh Studio Pottery was founded by Tessa Robinson, who lives and works in London. Her idea was to create a comfortable, homey place to work and be creative. Situated in a very busy and central location, just off Stoke Newington High Street, the studio is a drop of calm in a very fast moving world.

Tessa trained in Fine Art, specialising in sculpture (modelling in clay). On completion of a three year Post Graduate Course at the Royal Academy of Arts, Tessa set up a studio in Hackney. The transition from sculptor to potter came many years later whilst doing doctoral research in Maya archaeology at UCL. Inspired by Maya ceramic art, and in particular the pots which combined sculpted and painted imagery, Tessa moved from research back to making. After attending courses in pottery and taking up a membership at a London pottery studio, she set up Sak Beh Pottery and is now a full-time potter and maker.

Tessa's works are informed by both her Fine Art training and her research into Ancient Maya ceramic art. The phrase 'Sak Beh' can be found on Ancient Maya monuments where it refers to the Milky Way as an ancestral path or road as well as the physical roads which connect people to places. In keeping with its namesake, Sak Beh Pottery is envisaged as a place for community interaction within the context of a creative journey.

Excellent workshop! The teacher was very attentive and generous. Upon arrival and during the session we were offered a wide range of refreshments. All in all it was a lovely evening, extremely informative and worth every penny.

The class was enjoyable and we were shown and got to try out throwing a pot and hand building. We were asked to choose one item for firing. After the class we received no inf about whether the item had survived firing and when to collect. When I emailed to check on collection I received a very abrupt email telling me to check the website. I didn't travel to collect an item which made have been in pieces after firing.

Teacher's response

Hello Elizabeth, we are so glad you enjoyed your class and sorry you felt our reply was abrupt. I have looked at the reply and it conforms with all replies for collection of class work. It starts with a thank you for getting in touch and asks you to check the Sak Beh website for your collection dates. The description of the class on Class Bento reiterates the same and all our classes start with the teacher delivering this information. We have never had any pots that have not survived the kiln and your work is ready for collection. We would very much love you to collect your work and will hold onto the pieces in the earnest hope that you will do so. Thanks also for the feedback.

Lovely little studio and we got through lots of practical stuff in just two hours, and the main tutor was very encouraging, thanks!

The teachers were great, very lovely and helpful.
I'd definitely say that the experience was great value for money, a condensed taster course for both throwing and other pottery techniques. However, the only drawback was the fact the other students came fairly late and delayed the class.

Perfect taster session! Learnt the basics of multiple different methods. The teachers were great and the whole atmosphere was super relaxing. Since there was only five of us in the studio, we got a lot of teaching time. I’m excited to collect the piece I made!

Excellent and patient teachers take you through the whole process where you make around 5 pieces. Really enjoyable and fun

Absolutely lovely pottery class. Teachers were both amazing, really supportive and warm. The studio is beautiful. Made a few good pots - with help.

Just generally a lovely way to spend a Saturday morning!

The class was amazing and the teachers were very helpful. It was a small class so you had alot of one to one (if needed) which was great. Can make as many pieces as time allows and able to experiment. Teachers made sure you have a finished piece to take with you. Lovely experience, highly recommend!
