Join this introduction to metal thread embroidery improvers workshop in Hastings and learn how to create your own stunning "Strawberry Thief" inspired piece with expert artist Becky Hogg. Inspired by William Morris’s iconic 1883 design, you'll stitch a beautiful strawberry brooch or decoration using a palette of rich red, gold, pink, and blue metal threads.
This project is a fantastic way to get hands-on with a new technique. It's perfectly sized to be manageable, but there’s no need to worry if you don't finish everything during the session. You’ll be sent home with all the necessary materials and a helpful instruction booklet to complete your masterpiece at your own pace.
During this five-hour workshop, you'll be guided through several specialty techniques:
  • Couching – learn how to sew over metal thread with precision.
  • Cutwork loops – master cutting and sewing through fine metal springs.
  • Pearl purl edges – create professional, structured borders for your design.
  • 3D silk purl leaves – add the finishing touch with textured blue leaves that mirror the original print.
Your tutor, Becky Hogg, brings over 20 years of professional experience to the table. Having worked on high-profile projects for the Royal Opera House and the wedding dress of HRH Catherine, Princess of Wales, she’s a knowledgeable mentor who'll help you feel right at home in her studio. Between stitches, you can enjoy tea, coffee, and biscuits, and take a stroll through the local Old Town or nearby parks during the lunch break.
By the end of the day, you'll have gained the skills to turn your embroidery into a decorative hanging or a wearable brooch. You'll leave the studio feeling inspired by this historic craft and ready to show off a handmade keepsake that captures the elegance of classic design.
Please note: You must already have basic embroidery skills to attend this workshop, as it's an introduction specifically to metal thread techniques.
