Make a Felted Abstract Painting at Home

During the class, you can easily ask questions and get immediate responses. Zoom is free and easy to use, on any device. You're in control of your privacy - you can mute yourself and hide your webcam if and when you prefer.

If you want some creative things to do when bored, then this is the class for you. Be inspired by the masters of abstract art. You can make designs like Matisse's Cut-outs, Braque's The Birds, Bauhaus weavings, and more.

In this live online class, you will make an abstract design using coloured pre-felt shapes. Then you will place them atop of an A4 (or two A5) size pre-felt background. Using wet felt techniques, you will then bring your cut pre-felt together into the finished piece without the need for glue or a single stitch! You will get all the tools and pre-felt you need in your craft kit.

Pre-felt is perfect for creating collage-style imagery like in this online, DIY craft workshop. It is a partially processed felt, somewhere between the loose fluffy wool fibres and fully fused felt fabric. It can be cut into clean, crisp shapes and will keep its form very well.

When you develop your pre-felt into a fully formed painting, it takes a series of repetitive actions. Many people find this a real stress buster. It's a really productive thing to do at home if you need a way to relax.

It is a real hands-on activity, so if you have arthritis or a similar condition in your hands, you may find parts of the process more challenging. Your friendly teacher will be there to give advice whenever you need it.

• A selection of pre-felt pieces in various colours and sizes.
• An A4 background in a choice of three background colours: natural, blue or plaster.
• 1 x A4 tracing paper.
• 1 x A6 freezer paper.
• A net.
• A chunk of olive oil soap.
• Bubble wrap.

• Embroidery/textile scissors or nail scissors.
• Cardboard tube from tinfoil/cling film or rolling pin.
• A plant spray bottle, if you have one.
• A couple of tea towels or similar.
• Access to a water supply/sink.
• Your DIY kit sent in advance.
• Any designs you have worked up from the pre-workshop notes.
• A creative spirit!

This Box and Live class is a great indoor activity idea for individuals and couples as well as for virtual team building activities at home. This is a fun indoor activity, suitable for adults, and kids (minimum 15 years old). An adult must be present whilst kid(s) engage with the box.
