Learn to Sew at Home

Looking for things to do at home or a new DIY craft to get stuck into? Why not learn how to stitch and sew with this beginner-friendly virtual class?

During this online class, you will learn how to use a sewing machine to make your very own tote bag or a 40cm square cushion. Alternatively, you can use this online sewing class for one-to-one guidance with a particular sewing project.

Your friendly and encouraging teacher will guide you step-by-step and offer advice as well as helpful tricks, tips and techniques. Don't worry if this is your first time behind a sewing machine — this relaxed, one-on-one class is a great way to begin your sewing journey in the comfort of your own home.

By the end of this online craft class, you'll have a completed tote bag or cushion, or have furthered your own sewing project — but that's not all, you'll finish this sewing class with new skills, techniques and knowledge, ready to kick start your newfound hobby!

Please note:
If you are making a tote bag or cushion, this class may take up to thirty minutes longer.
Included is a free last-minute drop-in to a Stitch! General Sewing and Clothes Making Class when there is space on the day. This can be used to finish off anything not quite completed in your booked session(s) or to start a new project

This sewing class is suitable for all abilities, including beginners.
 

• Large piece of paper (newspaper is ok), ruler and pen to create a basic paper pattern.
• Sharp scissors for cutting fabric, Scissor for cutting paper, pins, tape measure, water erasable fabric pen or fabric chalk (sharpened), iron and ironing board, masking tape or washi tape.
• 100m reel of good quality sewing thread in a colour that will blend into your fabric.
• 1m medium weight cotton printed fabric.
• For the bag also bring 1.5m of 2.5-3.8cm wide strap material (webbing tape) in a matching or contrast colour to your fabric.
• Good lighting — ideally the light source should be in front of you, consider adding an extra lamp. Your teacher will need to be able to see your work clearly, so you may also want to consider propping up your device or using a tripod.
• Your own sewing machine with pedal and an empty bobbin.

Please order your supplies ten days before your class. Please also wash and iron fabric prior to your session, as most fabric shrinks the first time it is washed.
