What you'll do
If you've ever wanted to give pottery a go but weren't sure how to approach the wheel, fear not — this beginners' pottery workshop in London will give you all the skills and confidence you need to take your first steps in this relaxing craft.
Your friendly host, Amanda, will kick off the day with some lively practical demonstrations, explaining how to prepare and recycle your clay including demonstrations and what you can expect from the experience.
Amanda will spilt your experience into 3 sections, with two 30mins breaks so don’t forget a packed lunch or you can enjoy the on-site Orchard Cafe.
Section 1: Amanda will show you the ins and outs of 'Throwing'; working clay on the wheel and how to shape it to your liking.
Section 2: You'll use your new skills to experiment and practise with different types and different amounts of clay. The difference between a smooth clay and one with a little bit of grit is a completely different sensation. Using different amounts of clay needs practice as it can be harder but worth it, as you'll create bigger works of art.
Section 3: Step-by step, Amanda will teach you to 'Turn'. Turning is when you crave beautiful foot rings into your pots making your pots look professional and elegant. You can also add handles & other handbuilt art work to your pots.
At the end of the day, you will select up to 4 favourite pieces and finish not only with a set of gorgeous handmade art works, but with a head full of new skills, knowledge and pride in your accomplishment. (Extra pots can be kept for an additional fee of £25 per pot).
But that's not all, your beautiful handmade pottery will stay with Amanda for firing and you'll return a few weeks later for an additional 1.5 hour glazing workshop to add colour to your artwork and learn all about the firing process.
Don't worry if this is your first pottery experience, that's the point! Amanda will be on hand throughout the sessions. Being an artist she knows learning the pottery wheel requires focus so only offers this experience to small groups of up to 6 people. This way you'll have her full attention, to learn new skills, feel relaxed and create perfect pottery.
