Kiln-Fired Glass Enamel Workshop

This workshop will introduce you to working with kiln-fired enamels on glass surfaces.

2.5 hours Class size 1 to 8 guests       £55

This workshop will introduce you to working with kiln-fired enamels, both on flat and three-dimensional glass surfaces to showcase its ease at applying permanent colour into a piece. Rachel will cover hand-painting with various brushes, screen-printing with different imagery, as well as other mark making. You’ll have the opportunity to make a few different sample pieces or, if you prefer, focus on finishing one piece. Rachel will also cover how enamels can be used in conjunction with other kiln-forming techniques, how they are fired and any other technical troubleshooting that is of interest, including how to use them in different projects.
This experience is suitable for all levels of experience and confidence in making. Pre-cast shapes and pieces of glass will be available to apply enamel onto, to allow you to focus on that. All tools and materials are provided, although you are welcome to bring your own things if you would like to know if they are suitable. If you are inclined to be messy, you might like to bring your own apron too, but all enamel is pre-mixed with water-friendly medium so it doesn’t stain or need anything specific to remove from clothes or skin. Enamels are also all lead and heavy metal free.
If you’d like to extend your learning, Rachel will be teaching a morning workshop the same day on micro-casting using the Freeze and Fuse method.
All your pieces will be fired and posted back out to you. Postage is included in the workshop fee.

My name is Rachel Elliott and I'm a glass artist in Glasgow who specialises in kiln-formed glass, utilising traditional glass techniques with a quirky modern twist. I also go by the alter-ego name of FlyingCheeseToastie which is a bit of nonsense I've used over the years for my more whimsical work.
Before establishing my studio, I graduated from Edinburgh College of Art with a BA(Hons) in Architectural Glass and I have exhibited my sculptures globally in group exhibitions. I have been teaching glassmaking techniques to people of all ages and abilities since 2007 and I'm happy to answer any questions people might have too.
