Damascus Knife Making: Blacksmithing Course

What you'll do
Let the sparks fly and weld your own Damascus/pattern-welded knife in this two-day blacksmithing course. Absorb the sights, smells and experiences of a blacksmith at a rural working forge and craft something incredible to take home and treasure.
Guided by an expert team, you'll learn the basics of making pattern-welded steel, also known as Damascus steel. This forge experience is designed for those with some knowledge of blacksmithing.
Day one
- Learn to make your own pattern-welded/Damascus steel.
- Explore the ancient art of pattern welding.
- Make a billet from high carbon steel, folding and forge welding it until you get the desired layer count and pattern.
Day two
- Forge your steel it a blade of your own design.
- Learn how to heat treat your blade and bring out the unique pattern to yield a beautiful Damascus knife.
Throughout your two-day experience, you'll learn:
- How to choosing steels that will give a good pattern.
- To make up a billet (stacked layers of alternating types of steel forge welded together).
- How to use flux.
- Welding by hand, using a fly press and using a power hammer.
- Pattern manipulation by twisting and surface manipulations (grinding or forging into the bar to expose layers).
- Etching to reveal a pattern.
If you're a chef, a keen home cook, or are looking for gift experiences for a loved one with these interests, this is a brilliant craft experience to choose. This is a challenging blacksmithing experience and you'll certainly get a sweat on at some points in the process, but it'll all be worth it when you look at your beautiful, unique blade!

Suitable for those with some previous experience of blacksmithing.
What you'll get

- All PPE and safety equipment to use throughout your activity.
What to bring
- Wear appropriate, comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes.
- Wear warm clothes in colder months as although you'll be working inside a forging workshop it can get chilly (despite the roaring fires!).
- Before the class, you'll be sent some health and safety forms - please email these back in advance of your class or bring them with you on the day.

After the first session, subsequent sessions can be arranged with the teacher, at a time that suits you.
