Hello! We're Columbia Road Clay and we're an artist-run organisation working to provide free clay classes to our local community in east London. Proceeds from our wheel throwing classes help support our workshops for the local community.
By booking with us, not only are you receiving top-notch instruction and discovering a new hobby and craft but you are also helping create opportunities for others to learn and expand their creative horizons!

Thank you so much for the pottery taster! I've been talking about giving pottery a go for months and was kindly gifted this taster as a birthday present. This was the perfect introduction - simple and straightforward! I was thrilled to finish the class with a bowl and coffee cup that I'd made with a bit of help - can't wait for them to arrive! I can't fault our lovely teacher, she was so patient and kind and I really enjoyed the introduction where she talked about the pottery process - so much more behind the scenes than just the class! Would thoroughly recommend for anyone who would like to give pottery a go - can't wait for my next attempt Thanks again!

Great taster wheel throw pottery class. Our teacher was lovely (Unu I think is her name- apologies if I got this wrong!), kind, considerate and explained and demonstrated well what to do as well as being on hand to fix any issues. Two hours went in a flash!

We came to the class for my mums birthday with the whole family, and it was fantastic! Unu was a great teacher and helped us to create some fantastic pots - we can wait to see them glazed when they arrive home!
We were already a group of 4, which is the max size, meaning we had a private family class!
The workshop location was really easy to find, with a cute coffee shop very nearby.
Would love to do a class like this again!

We attended Melissa’s pottery class as two friends wanting to try something new - what a brilliant morning. Joined by one other lovely couple, the session was spent learning and observing the techniques for starting pottering. Neither of us having tried it before we were both anxious to see how it would go, but we soon realised the morning would be full of laughs and “learning curves”. We’ve still not got the “coning” quite down yet but now on the way to perfecting it A big thanks to Melissa for a memorable morning, having the patience of a saint and ensuring we still had a feasible pot to keep as a momentum. We can’t wait to put our olives in them!

What a fantastic experience. Our tutor Nol was excellent. He clearly loves working with clay and he was a magnificent teacher and extremely patient. We never imagined that we would actually be able to throw pots but we did and we were really happy with them. We can’t wait til they are fired and glazed and we will get to see them again. Thanks so much for an amazing experience. We would 100% recommend it.

I went with my friend for her birthday. Ania was so patient with us and made us very comfortable from the beginning . The flow of the class was a nice steady pace. Would highly recommend! Also very therapeutic at the same time !

Mallory is a lovely, witty and highly knowledgable teacher! We learnt so many things we didn’t know about the practice. She gave us a detailed demo and then we got to have a go, with Mallory giving us all plenty of 1:1 attention so that we all came out with a piece we were proud of. The studio itself is gorgeous and a calming space. We’re looking to return in the future for more. Huge thanks to Mallory for the perfect Sunday morning activity!

This was a present for my best friends birthday and we had such a good time The teacher was amazing and really showed us how to make our pots and sat with us all individually and helped us and asked what exactly we wanted to make and helped us get there. What a wonderful way to spend a couple of hours being creative. A real surprise of the class was how calm and relaxed we were made to feel as we all managed with the help of our skilled instructor Mallory, to produce beautiful bowls, cups or pots. Would thoroughly recommend.

The studio was lovely, it was good to see so many examples of other work on the shelves. Our teacher was brilliant and explained the process and gave some pottery background.
Doing it as a family was amazing and extremely levelling and bonding as each of us was able to work with our strengths and weaknesses.
We had so much fun and cannot wait to do it again!

Mal was a brilliant teacher, she made you feel confident and at ease and we had one to one coaching. We had great fun and really enjoyed our experience, the time flew by. The studio is really lovely, just the right size. My grandson who came with me was super proud of his bowl he made. Would definitely return and highly recommend the taster class.

Mal was a fantastic teacher and we massively enjoyed the class, it was a blast and flew by we were having so much fun. The studio is a lovely place and the classes are nice and small so you get great coaching. Would highly recommend to anyone who wants a taste of wheel throwing!

This was the perfect gift for my partner's birthday. Our instructor was very friendly and attentive, and a great teacher. The group was a lot smaller than I expected which meant each of us got plenty of attention and help from the instructor. The studio itself was beautiful as well. I would love to go again and I would definitely recommend it!

Had a fantastic taster class with Unu today.
Unu explained everything thoroughly, was very patient and excellent at troubleshooting where I was going wrong.
Pottery throwing was much harder than I thought it would be, but I am happy to have managed to make a bowl by the end of the taster class, which I am looking forward to receiving in a few weeks!

A small beautiful studio for our intimate class of 4 people meaning plenty of attention from our teacher
Brilliant value for money given that once you have learnt the basic skills you can keep creating new pieces until the session is over and then they all get sent to you a few weeks later.

My daughters took me as a birthday present for a taster session at Columbia clay . We had a lovely teacher Nom ( excuse the spelling if wrong) he was great ! First he showed us the different types of clays and explained their uses . We then moved on to a practical demonstration of how to throw your clay and create your own masterpiece ! Nom was very patient as we were total beginners he was helpful , informative and fun ! We tried different shapes and had lots of help till we had each made a piece we were happy to put our names to ! It was a lovely experience and we felt proud of our little creations

The workshop was great. There were only 4 of us in attendance which meant the teacher could give us 1:1 support. The teacher was very knowledgeable and helpful. We each managed to make 2 pots each.
The only downside was it went far too quickly!

Teacher demonstrated what we needed to, we all had quick practice of one of techniques in her clay, then she got us set up. Very helpful - not sure I would have had a pot at the end without a little help along the way.

I had a lovely time. Mallory was patient and knew how to share her knowledge in a very full way but concise enough as to not be totally overburdened with information. Also then whilst actually doing the pottery we did it in such a way as to not get lost in the process too.
The end result was an actual piece of pottery and knowing how you made it rather than being let loose with a wheel and some clay and stumbling around until you had some mud in the vague shape of something
The venue was really cute and overall I had a lovely two hours that I would like to think would progress into a little hobby.

I LOVED this class The studio was very welcoming, our teacher Akiko was amazing and super lovely! She demonstrated a few techniques (it was mesmerising) before letting us do our thing! It was the perfect balance of giving us creative space but also popping in to help us when we needed! As for the pottery itself… I think I just found my new hobby It was very mindful for me and I can’t wait for my next class already :) thank you Akiko for the wonderful experience!

I had a wonderful time - our instructor was Akiko who was very patient and nice. Two hours whizzed right by! We first watched her throw as she taught us the techniques, then we were given two chances to make something to put what we’ve learnt into practice while she walks around to guide us. Very pleased that I got to make a cup and a bowl with this package. I opted for the top up to have it glazed and shipped to me too. Well worth the money that gives you a good basic intro to pottery/throwing.

I had a great time learning the wheel with Malory and making a small pot in one of their taster sessions. She’s very knowledgeable and a great teacher. She made it very entertaining and it was a fantastic way to spend a Saturday afternoon. The location is great, bang in the middle of Shoreditch, make for a perfect day out in London. Also received my pot in the post a few weeks later and it’s charming. Would highly recommend!

Our teacher was lovely and encouraging. Considering we were both novices, we were very pleased to have any results at all from the session.
There’s a lot of information to take in so it can get confusing. 2 hours really is just enough time for a taster, but we did still manage to complete two separate items each, helped by a lot of patience from the teacher. Do keep in mind before starting a second piece that if you want to keep it you will need to pay extra. Totally understandable but the extra cost was only explained after we were given the choice of making a second item or finessing our first, and then finishing the second item.
It was good fun but we were a little disappointed that the last 15 minutes or so is spent cleaning up. It’s a somewhat negative way to end the session rather than enjoying looking at what we had accomplished. Great fun chatting though.

Since you booked the firing and shipping ticket, there are no additional fees and you can create as many pots as you like to keep! I booked this class for my partner's birthday present. It was a class of 4 people, which I feel was the perfect amount for having one on one time with the teacher. The teacher was patient and helpful and we managed to make something decent in the end! It is actually harder than it looks, but my partner enjoyed it alot! Thank you for teaching us clay throwing! It's definitely a workout for the hands and arms!

The teacher was very welcoming from the beginning. Small class so plenty of help. They put a lot of focus on the theory behind pottery at the beginning of the class, which helped a lot when we actually started throwing the clay.

I booked this pottery taster experience as a birthday treat for my friend. The venue was easy to find and Malory, who took the class, was very welcoming, friendly and put us all at ease straight away. There's only a maximum of 4 'students' in a class so we had ample of 1-2-1 time with Malory, who after explaining the principals of pottery making, guided us unrushed through each stage of the hands-on experience of making our pots. It was a fascinating class that I thoroughly recommend as not only do you have a lot of hands-on pottery time using the wheel and various techniques using clay, but you also experience how potters studio runs. We're looking forward to picking up our fired and glazed pots. Thanks Malory and Columbia Road Clay!

The class was amazing, and exceeded all my expectations. Great value for money. Our teacher explained everything thoroughly and she was very calm and nice. We only had time to learn the very basics but we managed to create our own pots at the end of the lesson, with the help of our teacher of course. We were only 4 people in the class which made it comfortable and easy to ask questions and be able to have some one to one time with the teacher as well!

This class was excellent and a great introduction to throwing. Myself and my girlfriend had great fun and we both came out with something which actually looked decent haha. This was all down to Mallory though as she was an excellent teacher and made sure we were all on track. That's also another main benefit of booking this class over others, the classes are max a group of 4 so you get a lot of one on one time, which is ideal.

Lovely class & great intro to pottery. Covered all of the basics in enough detail and then got to try our hand at the wheel with solid and helpful guidance and lots of 1-2-1 attention, creating a lovely pot.
It was just a shame we didn’t have more time to keep practising what we’d learnt as 2 hours flies by!

Fabulous pottery session with Mallory who was extremely knowledgeable, patient with my daughter’s and my efforts on the wheel. She had a first class technique and great teaching manor. The result some pots produced that really aren’t half bad for novices!
Moreover, given the COVID situation we were delighted to get this lesson in.
All very professional, friendly and well worth the trip to London for us.

The instructor was great, she really ensured we had a good understanding of what we were doing and why. She was patient and attentive and pushed us all to get the most out of the session. The studio is quite small, only big enough for four people so you get lots of hands on attention from the instructor. We actually spent the first half of the session learning about the clay, how it works and watching the instructor demonstrate basic throwing techniques. In the time we had left, we all managed to make one piece. I’m sure if you are a little more experienced than a true beginner you would be able to throw more than one. I felt really encouraged to continue with the course as a whole. I can’t wait to pick up my piece but the actual experience of making it is more valuable to me.

Mallory was an excellent teacher, this class was a brilliant introduction to pottery. It costs a bit more than other classes but it’s totally worth it due to the small class sizes and personalised attention you get - I messed up my pot several times but Mallory was always on hand to get me back on track and if you really mess up they even give you more clay to start again. I can imagine myself getting quite lost if it was a class of 14 and ending up not really learning anything. They spend a lot of time telling you about the theory though which I understand prepares you better when you get down to the throwing though I do think this could be a tad shorter to give us more time with the clay. All-in-all a great birthday treat for my husband!

My girlfriend took me to this pottery class for my birthday and it was incredible. The space is so beautiful and the teacher Gabby we really kind and patient. She took her time explaining all of the different steps to creating a pot and guided is through as we made our own. We made 5 pots between us and i really feel that I left with a good beginner understanding of pottery.

Gabrielle made this pottery class so fun! It was a birthday surprise from my partner who knows my live for pottery but he had not yet been introduced the the process. Gabrielle had to cater to two different abilities which she did wonderfully. She provided a good refresher into pottery making with easy to understand explanations that would be clear for a beginner as well. I would highly recommend this class as a fun and relaxing way to enjoy pottery making and for the best session for beginners as well.

My husband and I had a two hour pottery throwing taster session and it was brilliant! The teacher was really welcoming and was very patient with the both of us. The instructions provided were clear and easy to follow. I really recommend giving it a go. Thank you for such a great day

Brilliant introduction to pottery throwing. Great venue; really encouraging, patient and knowledgeable teacher; and good value for money.
Would highly recommend. A fun way to spend a couple of hours while trying out a new skill.
