2 x 6.5 hours - 13 hours Class size 1 to 6     label £225

If you're searching for exciting things to do in Edinburgh, why not immerse yourself in the classical mosaic techniques at this two-day mosaic course for beginners?

Day one will start with a short overview of the various methods, approaches and possibilities of mosaic making. You'll consider the tools, substrates and materials used for mosaics before focusing on the classical mosaic techniques of the art, including the rules of laying and andamento, the idea of the internal flow or movement of the tesserae.

You will then make a small practice piece to become familiar with these concepts before you begin work on your own 25cm square mosaic using the direct method with glue.

On day two, you'll continue working on your plaque to complete your mosaic. Your teacher will provide vitreous glass and Winkelman’s unglazed ceramic tiles as you choose from a selection of pre-prepared templates based on ancient designs or one of your own to which you can apply the same classical rules.

Your work will need time to dry, so the workshop will end with a grouting demonstration, and you will take home a small bag of grout and instructions to finish the mosaic at home.

Whether you're searching for crafty Edinburgh activities, hands-on hen party ideas, or you need gift experiences for a creative friend, this two-day class is sure to leave you with some fantastic new skills!

Helen Miles trained in the art of mosaic making with master craftspeople in Greece, which taught using traditional methods with a focus on Byzantine iconography. She later became interested in Roman mosaics and now makes contemporary pieces for interior and exterior spaces.

Born in Glasgow, Helen worked in America and the Middle East before moving to Thessaloniki in Greece in 2003, a UNESCO city famous for its concentration of Byzantine churches. It was while living there that she began to study mosaics which later led to a full-time profession as a mosaic artist.

Helen is now based at Out of the Blue Abbeymount Studios in Edinburgh. Initially, she specialised in using Greek stone and marble but is currently exploring the use of alternative materials including unglazed porcelain, Scottish stone and shells. Her aim is to preserve the simplicity and directness of early mosaics while producing works that suit the way we live now.
