Beginners' Sewing Class: Make a Pot Holder

Learn to use a sewing machine at this beginners' sewing class in London.

Want to learn to sew but don't know where to begin? Extend your thread of knowledge with this London sewing workshop for beginners.

Join sewing teacher Craig for this beginners' class offering an introduction to domestic sewing machines. Once you get the basics mastered, you'll be shown how to make a pot holder to take home with you.

After getting to grips with threading your sewing machine, you'll have the opportunity to explore different stitching techniques and seams, all with easy techniques provided by your teacher.

You'll also be shown some basic quilting techniques. You will choose from a selection of fabrics to design and make your pot holder.

Your sewing workshop covers:

  • Understanding the sewing machine and its functions.
  • Threading on your bobbin and inserting in the machine.
  • Threading the top threads and tips on what can go wrong and how to rectify.
  • Sewing with fabric for the first time.
  • Back stitching and securing your row of stitches.
  • Experimenting with all the different stitch styles on your machine and learning their uses.
  • Sewing in a straight line, around corners, around curves and spirals, using the foot control.
  • Overlock/zig-zag stitch to prepare your fabrics for wearability.
  • Sewing your first seam.
  • Designing and making your pot holder.

By the end of this sewing class, you'll have a solid understanding of the basics of using a sewing machine, and you'll be ready to sew your first garment!

This workshop is suitable for 14 years old and above. All minors must be accompanied by a participating adult.

Craig Parr is fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and adheres to COVID-19 government guidelines. They won't run this class if they've had a continuous cough, a high temperature, or a loss of or change in their normal sense of taste or smell, in the last 14 days.

Your safety is important to us!

On entering, we will have sanitiser stations for you to to freshen up. All machinery, sewing stations, and tools you will be using, will be sanitised before you arrive, and between each session.
At your sewing station you will also have sanitiser wipes, should you feel you need to use them.
Our lavatories are communal, but they will be supplied with santiser wipes, hand wash and disposable towels.

Face masks:
You are welcome inside with or without a mask, but please respect the choices of others, should they choose to wear a mask or not.

Who we are:

The Fashion Box was founded in 2013.

After graduating from Central Saint Martins, with a post-graduate degree in Advanced Innovative Pattern Cutting, Craig (Mr Fashion Box!) embarked on a kaleidoscope of successful ventures within the fashion industry.

Craig is a qualified university lecturer, graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University, with a Distinction in Academic Practice, teaching certificate.

During his time working in the fashion industry, he has worked alongside a huge selection of fashion houses, new designers and is a mentor to many university lecturers and fashion graduates.
He is also a former Collection Manager for Qasimi Homme, has worked alongside Sadie Clayton, and is currently working on production of a collection of clothing patterns for his own brand.

Craig has more than 25 years experience in teaching in universities and colleges, as well as with private clients. As a result, he is accomplished at getting the best out of both groups of students and one-to-one situations.

After 8 years at prestigious private Italian school, Istituto Marangoni, he left to pursue his dreams of opening his own fashion school, which resulted in The Fashion Box.

Craig is also former Head of Fashion at a London University, and is currently writing university programmes for fashion schools and universities worldwide.

He is a very patient, capable mentor and tutor, both to beginners and more experienced students.
